GaganYaan mission is the ISRO’s (Indian Space Research Organisation) first kind of mission to send Indian citizens to space from Indian soil by a made-in-India launch vehicle. GaganYaan mission is also a demonstration project to send 3 crew members to space in orbit of 400 km for 3 days and bring them back safely to Indian land, India becomes 4th country to have human spaceflight capability after the U.S., Russia, and China.
This mission is very close to the heart of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, who announced this project in 2018. GaganYaan’s mission requires some critical pre-requisite technologies like a human-rated launched vehicle for carrying the crew, a life support system to provide an earth-like environment in space, an emergency escape system, and training of the crew.
Indian Prime Minister also announced in 2023 that India will send humans to the moon’s surface by 2040, India’s most prestigious mission Chandrayaan 3 successfully landed on the South Pole of the moon.
Budget of GaganYaan Mission
Indian Government allotted 9023 crores around 1.2 billion US dollars to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to achieve all objectives of GaganYaan missions including developments of indigenous technologies like human-rated launch vehicles, life support systems, emergency escape systems, ground stations, and training of crew.
GaganYaan launch date
GaganYaan is expected to launch its 1st human spaceflight in 2025 with 3 Indian astronauts in a lower earth orbit of 400 km for 3 days.
Gaganyaan TV D1 test
Gaganyaan TV-D1, which was supposed to showcase the Crew Escape System (CES) demonstration. The purpose of this mission was to demonstrate the Crew Escape System for the Gaganyaan program through a test vehicle presentation. The vehicle reached a Mach number slightly above the speed of sound, initiating an abort scenario for the crew escape system. The system worked by moving the crew module away from the vehicle and completed post-operations, including a smooth touch-down in the sea.
ISRO has now observed the unique features of all three systems – the test vehicle, crew escape system, and crew module. Everything has been demonstrated successfully in the initial attempt.
GaganYaan two unmaned mission
Two unmanned missions are planned before the final mission to send humans into space to test various major technologies and capabilities.
1st unmanned mission
1st unmanned mission will be called G1 which is the first orbital test flight of the Gaganyaan capsule. It is scheduled for 2023. In this test, spaceflight will be launched at an altitude of 15km where scientists will stimulate the safe return of the crew capsule to Earth with the help of parachutes.
2nd unmanned mission
It will be called G2, It is the 2nd orbital test flight of the GaganYaan capsule and is scheduled for 2024. In this test, spaceflight will go higher altitude than the previous 15 Km and stimulate the return of crew members to Earth safely, but in this test, a humanoid robot Vyoma Mitra will be a crew of this test.
GaganYaan Robot
Vyoma Mitra is a humanoid robot in the shape of a woman that will go to space in GaganYaan’s 2nd unmanned mission to monitor safety parameters. Vyoma Mitra simulates a human function in space. It will also help astronauts in space in everyday activities.
Where Indian astronauts are trained?
Four Indian Air Force pilots are being trained at the astronauts’ training facility at Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (GCTC) in Russia. ISRO has signed a contract for the training duration of 1 year for Indian astronauts with Gavkosmos a subsidiary of ROSCOSMOS, the Russian space agency. In future Gaganyaan 2 missions, ISRO will give preference to female air force pilots or female scientists for space manned missions.
Indian astronauts will study the Soyuz manned spaceship and train in a short-term weightless mode in IL-76MDK aircraft.
Who is making Indian astronauts space suites?
Zvezda is a Russian company that is responsible for the design and manufacturing of life support systems and Space suites for Indian astronauts in Tominilo city 26 km from southeast of Moscow.
Zvezda is a subsidiary of the Russian Space agency ROSCOMOS which is also responsible for designing and manufacturing space suites and the life support system of Yuri Gagarin’s first human travel to space in 1961.
GaganYaan launch Vehicle?
GaganYaan mission will be launched by a human-rated launch vehicle LMV-3 rocket (formally GSLV Mk-III rocket) with a solid rocket booster (HS200 booster). Recently One Web India-2 mission was completed with the LVM3 rocket.
What would be the term for Indian astronauts?
It may be possible that Indian astronauts will be called Gagannauts. Every country has its choice to give a name to its space traveler the U.S.A. called its space traveler an Astronaut, Russia called its space traveler a Cosmonaut and China called its space traveler a Taikonaut.
GaganYaan aim
Space will be the next global frontier after land, sea, and air countries rush to explore space and discover resources on the Moon & Mars and look for signals of life in space. The U.S.A. and Russia dominate Space exploration and China is increasing its footprint in space by expecting its Space station and return rock samples from asteroids for research. Indigenously developed GaganYaan mission will put India in this race.
Gaganyaan 2 Mission
The Gaganyaan 2 mission is the extension of the Gaganyaan 1 mission, In this mission, ISRO will land humans on the surface of the moon, and integrate this Gaganyaan 2 with the Artemis mission of the USA.
gaganyaan mission to which planet
gaganyaan mission is to send 3 Indian crew members to space up to a height of 400 km only for 3 days.
gaganyaan crew members
there are 3 crew members for gaganyaan but their names have yet not been revealed by ISRO and there may be a woman in the crew.
Has ISRO sent any humans to space?
No, till now ISRO had not sent any human or living object to space but by gaganyaan mission, ISRO will send 3 humans to space.
What is special about Gaganyaan?
Gaganyaan mission is ISRO’s first mission to send 3 Indians to space from Indian soil by a made-in-India spaceship.
What was ISRO’s old name
ISRO’s old name was INCOSPAR(Indian National Committee for Space Research)
